Cricket is a very popular game in Sri Lanka. It was first introduced to the country during the British rule. Galle International Stadium is located near the Galle Fort and is surrounded by the Indian Ocean. It is known for its picturesque cricket field.

During the Tsunami in 2004 on boxing day, the building attached to the grounds along with the stadium was severely damaged. However, it was home to many providing shelter to hundreds of locals affected by the disaster. During the year 2006, the stadium underwent renovations and new buildings, a pavilion as well as a media centre was constructed and the stadium was reopened.

Before the Galle International Cricket Stadium was elevated to international cricket standards, it was the home ground of the Cricket Club of Galle. This stadium is considered as the Sri Lanka’s National Cricket Team’s luckiest venue!
