Sri Lanka is one of the breeding grounds for endangered sea turtles however due to the overdevelopment of the coastlines has resulted in a reduction in the sea turtle population.
Habaraduwa, a small city located in between Galle and Mirissa is home to the Habaraduwa Hatchery and is located just 8km away from Unawatuna. This organization is dedicated to the breeding of the ever declining numbers of sea turtles.
This is a great place to visit with your family/ kids as you can learn alot about the life cycle of sea turtles, see turtle eggs and even get to hold the baby turtles. This place is also a rehabilitation center to injured sea turtles, once fully recovered, the sea turtles are released back into the ocean.
The most common types of sea turtles found in this hatchery are leatherback turtles, green turtles, loggerhead turtles, hawksbill turtles and olive ridley turtles.
If you’re lucky you might even get to release the newly hatched baby turtles into the ocean while you’re in Habaraduwa!
